How do we get there?

1 08 2008

As we begin our journey, we also ask these questions:

“How do we get there?” or “Which way do we go?”

Psalm 86 is a prayer from King David in which he writes, “Teach me your way, O Lord, and I will walk in your truth; give me and undivided heart that I may fear your name.”  Through David’s prayer we learn of the need for direction on the journey, and we pray: “Teach me YOUR way…”

In Jeremiah, God says that He knows the plans, or the way, for us and He desires to give hope and a future.  We are a pleading for God’s direction, leading toward places of hope, in life and circumstances, and toward a future.  He gives us the promise that if we pray, He will listen; and if we seek Him, we will find Him.  We pray that He will give us direction and will plant us  among people groups who need His hope and His future.

Jesus says in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me.”  He is the way.  On our journey, our prayer is that He will reveal His way and lead us into harvests of redemption, hope, and life.

Father, we are thankful that when we need direction in our lives that you are The Way.  Thank you for your promises to us.  We ask, Father, that you teach us your ways that we might walk in them.  Fill us with the knowledge of your will and your ways through spiritual wisdom and understanding, and give us endurance and patience as we run the race set before us (Colossians 1:9-12, Hebrews 12:1).

A Prayer Journey

31 07 2008

In preparation for a trip, we consider several things:  “Where are we going?”; “How do we get there?”; “What do we need?”  To begin, we might seek to find the prime destination and then discover the means by which to get there.  We make arrangements, fill our suitcases, and pack our cars…then our journey begins!

Where are we going?

We are embarking on a prayer journey.  As with any journey, we must put time and effort into the preparations.  First we ask, “What is our prime destination?”  Throughout scripture God calls His followers to seek after Him.  In Matthew 6:33, Jesus says, But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”  In 2 Chronicles 7, the Lord responds after the dedication of the temple:  “if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.  Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayers offered in this place.”  As we begin our journey, our prayer is that we first might seek Him, find Him, commune with Him, and know Him.

Father, we ask that you reveal yourself to us as we seek you.  We have begun  our journey and YOU are our destination.  Please show us more and more of who you are and give us a Spirit of wisdom and revelation so that we might know you better. (Ephesians 1:15-20)
